‘Britain destroyed India through looting, expropriation – and outright theft – all conducted in a spirit of deep racism and amoral cynicism.’ One man’s blistering critique of our colonialist past by one of the world’s leading diplomats. Shashi Tharoor, now an Indian MP, has just published his latest book on the iniquities of the British Empire. And its themes have echoes today.

  1. The ugly british bastards looted the Indian subcontinent for 200 years, celebrated industrial revolution looting wealth from India… impoverished India ….created famines in India .. Germans did a great job by bombing the britishers…instead of moving to Russia, Germans should have concentrated their full energy on bombing britain only and should have eradicated the ugly british race forever from this universe…

  2. Idiots still trying to figure out a way to rewrite their history (whilst he makes money out of writing fiction for the uneducated people) just be grateful, thats all we British ask.

  3. cheeky monkey, india was a divided country before the british came, in fact it had suffered hundreds of years of religious wars, first with muslims genociding hindus and later when the hindus grew a back bone and created the maratha empire they were on the verge of pushing out the muslim population (mughals), its true the british were imperialists, but all the same they brought law and order, built infrastructure, such as railways and universities and defended india from invaders such as the afghans and the japanese, the british also create the groundwork for india to sell its goods on the free global market, this has enabled india to become a powerhouse in asia and a soon to be superpower, this MP insists that india is as powerful as the UK, but how come he then insists that indians need to come to the UK as students to be educated? why can't they educate their own people if they are so great?, then he says that the uk needs to import more indian people, knowing that the UK is already full and is only a tiny nation in comparison to the billions of people that populate his own open sewer country, as for british atrocities committed in india, maybe he should learn his own history and explain the cawnpore massacre, when indians cut the necks of innocent captive british women and children and pushed them down a well en masse to die

  4. The British empire was bad compared to what …..?The Mughal, ranjitt singh,Pandey.its like saying Vercingetorix would have built modern france if it wasnt for that pesky ceasar .britian ruled india for profit then prestige then pride then embarrassment but in the process they made 4 states. its bewildering to see so called "historians" apply modern values to an empire.Name me the moral state that had a coast and a trading interest.

  5. Theres only so long you can insult a country and expect them to want to support you. People want to constantly kick the UK because of our history. Yes fair enough we did horrible stuff. So did every other country in existence. The only reason we are targeted is because we had the largest empire. We are the easiest to target yet it so easy for all of you ‘victims’ to forget the atrocities committed by all other nations in the world. Bunch of hypocrites

  6. I really like this guy, but there are way too many brainwashed, uneducated Indians on this planet that like to blame a country that left 70 years ago for its incompetence to this day. Germany has lost 2 world wars yet look where they are now.

With a similar population to China, it must be a little embarrassing how far behind you guys are to them.

  7. You said it Shashi. English colonial history will not be taught in schools or if it is, in a watered down form. When Britain protests against human right violations in other countries they never remember all the atrocities the British committed across their empire. Conveniently sweeped under the carpet.
There was a saying at the height of British colonial rule. “The sun never sets on the British Empire”. Although meant to convey the size of the empire the real reason was that “you can’t trust the white man in the dark.

  8. With the population of India it wouldn't matter if British stole from India or not, the quality of life for people with such large population will always suffer. You guys need to control your population before your big cities become completely unlivable due to pollution alone.

  9. You do realize the British workforce suffered greatly to fund the imperialists! The living conditions in the UK rose greatly when the empire ended! That's why I think working class Brits that are proud of the empire are the most stupid people on the planet…

  10. Good on sashi! I’m British and have travelled india for the past 20 years it’s an amazing country i would even call it a second home it really makes me ashamed that Britain has done this to India it’s sickening and my ancestors weren’t even in Britain when it was happening nonetheless we should give the jewel back along with the dignity the uk took

  11. The Nazi history, Japan`s brutal history, Britain`s empire history, all things like this are covered BRILLIANTLY by this man. I love how he said about wearing medals `It is your history you are entitled to it` People calling to pull down statues of leaders who were related to slavery for example but who are celebrated for different things, people wanting books removed because they mention slavery despite being written in the 1800`s. History is history and we should all forgive it and just learn from it but never forget.

  12. Given the realities of overburdened infrastructure coupled with problematic cultural differences, the foisted "freedom of movement" immigration doctrine in the UK is no longer acceptable.

    India has approximately 1,342,000,000 people.
    The UK has approximately 65,000,000.
India has about 450 people /sq/km
    The UK — about 70 people/sq/km.

Demographics concepts are no longer governed by the open doors – revolving doors policies of the past. The UK isn't India, and India isn't the UK… the same as Bruxelles isn't the UK, and the UK isn't Bruxelles. TGFT
